Release Year=2019 / Liked It=86 Votes / 132 minutes / / creator=Ling Zhang / Director=Xiaogang Feng. | Simon Abrams December 20, 2019 The Chinese romantic-drama “Only Cloud Knows” is sappy, slow, and mostly effective. It’s also a notable change-up for director Xiaogang Feng (“Youth, ” “ I Am Not Madame Bovary ”), the popular mainland filmmaker who’s sometimes called “China’s Spielberg” because of his melodramatic blockbusters’ inescapable popularity. Feng’s CV is a mix of tones and styles that includes broad comedies (“Personal Tailor”), historical dramas (“Aftershock, ” “Back to 1942”), and popcorn thrillers (“Cell Phone”). With “Only Cloud Knows, ” Feng has made another melancholic tearjerker in the same vein as his two “If You Are the One” rom-drams (2008 and 2010). “Only Cloud Knows, ” which follows a widower’s attempts to better understand his dead wife, is a little more ponderous than his earlier weepies, but is often involving and usually affecting thanks to Feng and writer Ling Zhang’s focus on little anecdotal details taken from real-life couple Shu Zhang and Yang Luo’s lives. So while Feng’s latest may be unbearably sentimental and too blunt, it’s also good enough, if you’re looking for a little romance and a good cry. Advertisement “Only Cloud Knows” starts slowly: love-sick widower Dongfeng Sui ( Xuan Huang) gets into a beat-up sedan, and heads out (while a syrupy acoustic guitar ballad plays) to the New Zealand country home where he and his late wife Yun Luo (Caiyu Yang) spent 15 years together. Yun and Dongfeng have Anglicized names (Simon and Jennifer, respectively), but Dongfeng prefers their Chinese names because their translation has a cute resonance—he’s the “wind” to her “cloud. ” In the first half of Dongfeng’s story, he remembers living and working with Yun at Yun’s Chopsticks, their Clyde-based Chinese restaurant. He and Yun have a cute dog named Blue, a steadfast mutual friend named Melinda ( Lydia Peckham), and a lot of beautiful, flat grasslands to bask in. Dongfeng’s memories are mostly sweet, though he also recalls some darker moments, like a close call he and his wife had with a drunk (and obviously racist) customer, who threatened them with a gun tucked in his waistband. Even this scene is mostly gentle since it boils down to hard stares, sincere apologies, and tight embraces. This half of “Only Cloud Knows” is consistently warm, as in any scene involving Blue. Blue’s story obviously ends unhappily (this is a romantic-drama), but even his scenes are filled with enough pregnant pauses to make the movie’s relentless wistfulness mostly charming. But wait, there’s a lot more where that kind of oppressive melancholy came from: after about an hour of reminiscing, Dongfeng realizes that he didn’t understand Yun as much as he’d like. So he flashes back again, this time to when he first met and became engaged to Yun. Here’s when “Only Cloud Knows, ” a movie whose dreamy title makes it sound like a forgotten message movie from the 1960s, will either completely turn you off or break you down. Because at this point, Dongfeng whips out his dead wife’s ashes, and goes on a whale-watching tour near Auckland, where he and Yun first met (she loves blue whales). Dongfeng tells the ship’s captain a few more things about Yun, like how they first communicated through snippy post-it notes (Clean the dishes! ) left around the two-story apartment that they both sub-let from kindly Chinese expatriate Mrs. Lam (Fan Xu). As usual, there’s a silver lining to every cloud: even a fist fight over a parking space end with an Auckland police officer telling Yun that Dongfeng really cares for her, and also, he would make a great cop. Nobody stays mad at each other for long in “Only Cloud Knows, ” so there’s really no major conflict to resolve. The movie’s gauzy, sad atmosphere makes even laughably precious scenes feel momentous, like when Yun agrees to marry Dongfeng on the condition that they win big at roulette, using the world’s slowest roulette wheel. This scene may be obvious and canned, but it still works, much like the inevitable (and seemingly interminable) scene where he spreads her ashes in what only feels like slow motion. When you think about what you’re looking at—even for a second—the moment passes. But then the scene keeps right on going, and it’s somehow mushy magic all over again? Then back to silly … but maybe unbearably sad, too? The best parts of “Only Cloud Knows” are both impossibly silly and touching. Feng and Zhang sometimes make their movie’s glacial pacing feel like an extension of their protagonists’ doomed, chaste romance. Dongfeng’s intrusive (but also infrequent) voiceover narration slaps a tidy bow on his story, but the movie’s big emotional beats still land. I’m especially taken with the scene where Dongfeng proposes to Yun. While a hot pot samovar boils loudly in the foreground, he tells her, at length, how much he cares for her: “From now on, I'll drink water so you can drink wine. I'll eat rice so you can eat meat. ” There’s a fair bit of dead air in “Only Cloud Knows, ” but that’s a smooth line. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

Movie Online Zhi You Yun Zhi da vinci. December 21, 2019 8:16PM PT A Chinese émigré travels New Zealand with his wife's ashes, reliving their relationship, in Feng Xiaogang's shamelessly mushy weepie. To international audiences more accustomed to the relative restraint of China’s arthouse exports, “Only Cloud Knows, ” a slab of toothcrackingly sentimental mooncake from regular national box-office conqueror Feng Xiaogang, might come as a bit of a surprise. This episodic, determinedly winsome love story, told in honeyed flashback, follows a grieving husband as he journeys to the places of significance to his beloved, dead wife across their adoptive New Zealand homeland. The locations are stunning, the actors attractive and Feng — initially a comedy director, though he’s branched out in recent years to historical epics like “Back to 1942” and dramas like 2017’s record-breaking “Youth” — did not get where he is without learning a thing or two about playing an audience’s responses. So while your rational mind is rebelling against its more shameless manipulations, your hands may well be scrabbling through your bag for tissues, napkins, store receipts, candy wrappers — anything to mop up a flood of saltwater tears so deep, it’s possible a whole pod of whales (a recurring motif) lives within it. It starts with a shellshocked Sui Dongfeng, aka Simon ( Huang Xuan, from Feng’s “Youth”) moving soundlessly through his Auckland home trying to summon the ghost of his pretty wife, Yun Luo aka Jennifer ( Yang Caiyu, also from “Youth”). She does briefly appear, but after a chaste hug and a bit of tidying (misty though its view of fateful, soulmate-style love is, the film has a fairly retrograde idea of a woman’s role) and slips away again, leaving Simon bereft. And so he embarks on his very, very sentimental journey, though New Zealand’s picturesque North and South Islands, to revisit the places where they made such sweet memories, and to scatter her ashes. Although this modern-day journey is the film’s basic narrative, it is really just a framing device for a movie that, like Simon, lives in the past. And so the real tale is told in two gluttonous series of flashbacks of which, awkwardly, the first is set later in time, detailing the newlyweds moving to a small town called Clyde and opening a Chinese restaurant, while the second covers the couple’s meet-cute as young immigrants to Auckland from Beijing. These reminiscences are suspended in the amber romance of DP Zhao Xiaoding’s outrageously pretty photography, petted ceaselessly by Dong Gang’s omnipresent, emotive score, and usually cued by someone happening into a slant of golden light, assuming a faraway look and saying, “I remember the very first time I met her…” If Dong’s music spares us a harp glissando to transport us into the past, it’s almost the only trick in the old-school melodrama box it does not use. The most curious facet of “Only Cloud Knows” might just be its incuriosity. Despite an evident entrancement with the ribbons of roadways that trail through New Zealand’s rolling hills, and the cattle-dotted fields that surround the couple’s new home, there is very little here that approaches anything like commentary on the struggles or rewards of the Chinese expatriate lifestyle in New Zealand. Though we know they both grew up in Beijing, we never find out exactly why either moved away, much less why specifically to this far-flung land. In Clyde they make exactly one local friend, Melinda (Lydia Peckham), a sparky waitress with an adventurous spirit whose world travels occasionally give Jennifer a little sigh of envy. The rest of their time is spent making the restaurant a success, doing nice little things for each other and playing with their smart, scruffy, rescue dog, Blue. At this point, their oddly self-contained life is one of such picture-perfect tweeness that we’d know tragedy — human and canine — awaited even if the lightly portentous minor-key piano accompaniment didn’t basically skywrite that fact across the massive South Island heavens. Across this and the earlier time frame, in which Jennifer and Simon meet while both renting rooms from kindly widow Mrs Lin (Feng regular Fan Xu), the film traces their friction-free relationship with plodding fidelity. But though the story is loosely based on the real-life experience of one of Feng’s close friends and collaborators — or maybe because of that — it feels ethereally divorced from reality. Jennifer, despite Yang Caiyu’s best efforts and unerring ability to locate the loveliest light to gaze sadly into, is a sliver of a character, whose air of haunted melancholy, and need for “protection” are frequently mooted, but never really explained, until the film’s unsatisfying coda. That final revelation is, however, delivered by the wonderful Zhao Shuzhen, so beware that just when you might have put away the tissues for good, the grandmother from “The Farewell” is going to show up to wring a few more out of you. Schematic and manipulative as it is, as a kind of team-effort between the New Zealand Tourist Board and whatever the Chinese equivalent of Hallmark is, “Only Cloud Knows” is, in the moment, undeniably effective at jerking tears. If it does anything like the numbers that Feng’s films have done in the past, expect reports of mass dehydration. Only Cloud Knows 4. 0 stars The narration makes it clear: the one who gets left behind suffers. A Bejinger named Simon (Xuan Huang) returns to Auckland to make good on a promise to spread the ashes of his late wife Yun (Caiyu Yang) in her favorite place. Characters enter and exit director Xiaogang Feng’s narrative; many add gravitas — most notably the couple’s best friend Melinda (Lydia Peckham) — but all leave an indelible impression. Some are given but a sentence or two: “I’ve been through this. I understand, ” says the anonymous woman seated in the veterinarian’s waiting room, trying to comfort Simon over the passing of his dog, Blue. (Never has a film paid such loving attention to euthanizing a pet. ) And that’s just the first hour. The skipper’s reaction after Simon finishes telling him about Yun is hands down the most beautiful moment put on screen this year. Based on a true love story, there isn’t an emotional experience with which to warm your heart this holiday season than comes close to this. 2019. — Scott Marks This movie is not currently in theaters.

China Lion Only Cloud Knows is now screening in select New Zealand cinemas. Only Cloud Knows (M, 132mins) Directed by Xiaongang Feng ★★★★  Simon (Huang Xuan) spent his whole life intertwined with Jennifer ( Yang Caiyu) and yet, now, he feels like he never spent enough time with her. Reflecting on their relationship as he prepares to make the 15, 000km journey to scatter her ashes in her favourite places, he recounts how the Beijing-born pair finally met in an Auckland boarding house. Simon, better known to his parents as Sui Dongfeng worked as a language school tutor and food delivery worker at nights, while "Luo Yun" spent her days at the fish markets. It was months before their first face-to-face encounter. She was charmed by his flute playing, he had decided to marry her from the moment she said "hi". Jennifer took a little more persuading. Tiring of the big city, they decided to take up an opportunity to open a restaurant in the remote Central Otago town of Clyde. Learning quickly that customers preferred spring rolls and sweet and sour chicken to traditional Chinese cuisine and, with the help of their waitress Melinda (Lydia Peckham), Yun's Chopsticks and its owners became an integral part of the local community. However, even as they grow into their peaceful and idyllic life, Jennifer remains unsettled. As the years go on, she becomes increasingly worried that they are becoming trapped by the restaurant and wonders how she can persuade Simon to start a new chapter elsewhere. Shot in New Zealand, Chinese drama Only Cloud Knows is a charming, heartwarming and wrenching love story well worth seeking out. Part of its power comes from its fractured narrative, which leaves their meet cute until the final act. At first, that seems somewhat perplexing, but it's eventual reveal is particularly satisfying. What starts out as if it might be a Chinese version of Ghost, will leave you feeling like you've witnessed an interesting counterpoint to Noah Baumbach's critically acclaimed Marriage Story. Mt Cook National Park is one of the Kiwi locations featured in Only Cloud Knows. Likewise, while the couple's triumphs and tragedies follow a fairly traditional path, you can't help but be drawn into their romance, thanks to the luminous performances from Xuan ( The Great Wall) and Caiyu (TV series Seven Days). It's also easy to see why New Zealand's film and tourism organisations are keen to leverage off the movie. The country is a real character in the movie, with Clyde, Kaikōura and Mt Cook all getting the chance to show off their wares. Also featuring one of the best canine performances of the year, Only Cloud Knows is a charming, heartwarming and wrenching love story well worth seeking out. * In English and Mandarin with English subtitles. Movie Online Zhi You Yun Zhi day in the life. Movie online zhi you yun zhi dao youtube. Movie Online Zhi You Yun Zhi dao. Feng Xiaogang’s soulful drama is set largely in New Zealand where an expat widower looks back on his life Dir: Feng Xiaogang. China. 2019. 132 mins China’s perennial box office king Feng Xiaogang may be widely associated at home with his own particular brand of scatological comedy, but there are more strings to his directorial bow. Following his last flat-out farce Personal Tailor (2013), Feng made the formally experimental social critique I Am Not Madame Bovary (2016), then the nostalgic coming-of-age drama Youth (2017), both of which travelled widely overseas, and he now tries his hand at romantic drama with Only Clouds Know. Based on a true story involving one of Fengs’s colleagues and mostly set in the tranquil New Zealand countryside, it’s an earnest, episodic tearjerker revolving around a relatable central couple. While it may not prove to be one of Feng’s biggest hits, some of which have set local admissions records, Only Cloud Knows is sure to perform well with mature domestic audiences while its idyllic vision of rural overseas life could lure a millennial crowd seeking a cinematic respite from China’s hustle and bustle. Receiving a day-and-date international release from China Lion, the film could be warmly embraced by the disaspora, particularly throughout Australasia given it is based around an Auckland-based expatriate Sui Dongfeng (Huang Xuan), first seen as he comes to terms with the recent passing of his beloved wife, Luo Yun (Yang Caiyu). Fulfilling her request that her ashes be divided and left in four places of deep personal significance, he sets off on a journey that spans New Zealand and China. The first stop is Clyde, a rural town where the couple lived for fifteen years, with the road trip prompting the first of several extended flashbacks. We learn that they had relocated from the city to open a Chinese restaurant and settled comfortably into the local community, becoming close friends with waitress Melinda (Lydia Peckham) whose enthusiastic personality ensures plenty of repeat business. Over the years, they weather their share of setbacks, with the passing of time marked by advertisements for the restaurant’s annual anniversary specials. At one point, Yun asks Dongfeng if he would ever consider living somewhere else. He seems to think they already have the perfect life, but she is quietly harboring frustrations beneath a fairly contented surface. As a take on the Chinese diaspora, Feng doesn’t shy away from some of the difficulties, and occasional prejudices, posed by overseas living but largely portrays cultural assimilation as a smooth process through the shared experiences of an appealing couple. Although less wry than the director’s usual male protagonists, Dongfeng is another practical type who sees the world as it is (“The mouth is king, if you can’t fill it, who cares what your eyes and ears want? ”) but cheerfully tries to make the best of every situation. Like previous Feng heroines, Yun wrestles with her agency, occasionally demonstrating an independent, determinist streak yet ultimately conforming to a traditional role. Huang and Yang, both of whom starred in Youth, soon establish a tender rhythm. Feng and cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding take full advantage of New Zealand’s scenic splendor, lovingly portraying small town life in bright or earthy tones, with plenty of landscape shots to accentuate the peacefulness. Within the context of mainstream crowd-pleasers, Feng has taken on the mantle of ecological crusader, emphasising the ravishing vistas of Hainan Island in If You Are the One 2 (2010) and using the coda of Personal Tailor to make a plea to save China’s natural environment before it’s too late. While his previous statements have been arguably undermined by their association with China’s booming leisure culture (protagonists were wealthy tourists or business travellers), the couple here is less well-heeled. Scenes depicting such wonders as the beauty of the Southern Lights and whale watching at Kaikoura transcend postcard territory to convey an everyday yearning for a glimpse of the extraordinary. Given that China’s romantic dramas have a propensity for outright melodrama, often through tragic twists, it’s refreshing that Zhang Ling’s screenplay is so resolutely low-key. Only Cloud Knows doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel as the catharsis of the final act hinges on revelations, but what could have been rather mournful instead becomes a poignant celebration of life thanks to Feng’s deft handling of patently sincere material. Production companies: Alibaba Pictures, Mayla Medi, Emperor Motion Pictures, Huayi Brothers International sales: Emperor Motion Pictures, ( US distribution: China Lion) Producers: Hu Xiaofeng, Matt Noonan Screenplay: Zhang Ling Production design: Wang Kuo Editing: Zhang Qi Cinematography: Zhao Xiaoding Music: Dong Gang Main cast: Huang Xuan, Yang Caiyu, Lydia Peckham, Xu Fan, Zhang Hongjie.

More from Variety Zhao Shuzhen on Stealing Scenes in Her First American Movie, 'The Farewell' Feng Xiaogang's 'Only Cloud Knows' Heads for North American Release (EXCLUSIVE) Feng Xiaogang's 'Only Cloud Knows' to be Sold by Hong Kong's Emperor It starts with a shellshocked Sui Dongfeng, aka Simon ( Huang Xuan, from Feng’s “Youth”) moving soundlessly through his Auckland home trying to summon the ghost of his pretty wife, Yun Luo aka Jennifer ( Yang Caiyu, also from “Youth”). Sign up for Variety’s Newsletter.
